Carlsbad Unified School District
Assessment Team
Welcome to the Carlsbad Unified School District! Your child has been referred to the Assessment Team for an evaluation of his/her skills. Our assessment team will provide you with written reports summarizing your child’s present levels of development, as well as, recommendations to help address any possible delays. Each preschool transdisciplinary assessment team is tailored to meet the specific needs of your child. The Assessment Team may consist of specialists in the following areas of child development: cognitive functioning, speech/language development, fine/gross motor skills, pre-academic, health, vision and hearing.
The assessments for the Carlsbad Unified School District preschool program will be conducted at Jefferson Elementary School. Following the assessments, you will be invited to attend an Individual Education Program (IEP) planning meeting to discuss the results of your child’s evaluation. Should the Assessment Team find your child is demonstrating delays necessitating specialized instruction, you will participate in the development of annual goals and help to determine an appropriate educational placement for your child where the goals can be implemented.
Please be aware that a complete transdisciplinary preschool assessment is very time consuming and will probably require four to five visits. It is advised that your child be well rested and fed before the evaluations so that his/her best abilities can be appropriately assessed. Should you have any questions or concerns during the evaluation process, please direct your questions to Kathryn Nichols, case manager for initial preschool team referrals, at (760) 331-5073.
Again WELCOME to the Carlsbad Unified School District’s Assessment Team. We look forward to working with you and your child.
